Cogeneration Facility Steam Tunnel Replacement Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Crowder Construction was awarded the phase II portion of the Cogeneration Facility Steam Tunnel Replacement Project at UNC Chapel Hill which consisted of a 1200-foot long cast-in-place tunnel with an average depth of 25 feet, as well as the construction of 1100 feet of duct-bank. Crowder teamed with Schnabel Engineering to design-build an extensive shoring system of 1100 LF of soldier pile and lagging. Critical to this project was the 60-day window in which a portion of the construction under the delivery tracks had to be completed or the university would run out of coal, which was necessary for campus operations. Crowder worked virtually around the clock to complete the project on time and without any disruption to the plant.
This project successfully served as an NC Department of Labor Building Star safety site.

Charlotte Douglas Airport - Bridges and Roads Location: Charlotte, NC
This City of Charlotte project involved the relocation of Old Dowd Road and the construction of Rental Car Connector Road on the north side of Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. The work at Old Dowd Road included the construction of a 285-foot bridge spanning two future railroad tracks. The work at Rental Car Connector Road included the construction of a 387-foot bridge spanning two existing railroad tracks and four future railroad tracks, a 112-foot utility culvert, approximately ¼ mile of new roadway on Rental Car Connector Road, and approximately ¼ mile of improvements along Old Dowd Road. All work completed during airport operating hours at the Rental Car Connector Road site was restricted to an overhead clearance of 25 feet above the new roadway grades. No equipment, personnel or materials were allowed in this restricted airspace during that time.

ASU Steam Tunnel Project Location: Boone, NC
Crowder was awarded a project to construct a new steam tunnel with high pressure and pumped condensate lines and three new manhole vaults at Appalachian State University. Included in this project was a 220 feet long, 7 feet in diameter jack-and-bore tunnel with two new manhole vaults. The project included all site grading, paving, installation of tunnel and vaults along with associated pumps, piping, valves, installation of a new electrical system in the tunnel and vaults, installation of new piping and valves in existing campus manholes, temporary steam piping, and asbestos abatement. The project was situated along and under a main road through campus critical to student access. In spite of excessive rain, Crowder worked very closely with the university to open (several days ahead of schedule) the affected section of road.
